I connected with Patty from Uptown Communications a little while go through a strange twist in fate - I thought I was sending an email to somebody else, but in fact it ended up with Patty, and I'm so glad it did! Patty and her business partner Ash co-founded Sydney-based Uptown Communications, and I was so impressed to hear of their story of making the leap from the safety of the corporate world to starting their own marketing & communications business. I strongly believe that engaging with experts wherever possible is one of the best things a small business owner can do, and these ladies clearly deliver for their significant client portfolio! Tell us about your business and any specialties you have:
Uptown Communications began as a laughed off idea between two friends and former colleagues after a catch up dinner. Myself and my business partner Patty had previously spent three years working together in politics. As the saying goes, “if you want a friend in politics, buy a dog!”, but fortunately this wasn’t the case for us. Not only did we manage to survive as friends in politics, we also discovered that we have a perfect set of complementary skills to form a communications agency. At the time, I had accumulated almost a decade of experience in media and marketing for not-for-profits, government and corporates, whilst Patty had spent the same amount of time in event management, corporate partnerships and fundraising. After brainstorming a list of 15 absolutely terrible potential names (Uptown didn’t even make the shortlist at the time), we really hit the ground running and haven’t stopped since. 2 years on, we’re now working with a diverse range of clients – from innovative startups, to medical research institutes and parliamentarians.
What makes your business stand out from the rest?
We believe in finding a ‘social good’ angle wherever possible. The best way to market your organisation, brand or product is to have third parties sharing your content for you. There are generally just two types of stories – bad news, or good news. No one covers anything ‘beige’ and no one wants ‘bad’. So, regardless of what we’re communicating, we always strive to create ‘good’! This is our unique, strategic approach that not only opens doors to opportunities for cross promotion, partnerships and media coverage, but it also allows us to be driven by something bigger than profits and publicity.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
We love the diversity of our job! Our days are never dull because we work with such a unique and interesting range of clients. We work with a great group of really talented freelancers in the areas of business consulting, strategy, graphic design and coding. Being surrounded by exceptional talent every day means we’re constantly learning and expanding our skills. Consulting is also a really empowering work lifestyle. We have the flexibility to choose our hours and workplace. If we don’t have any meetings scheduled and feel like working by the beach for the day, we can! If we feel like going to the gym for a workout in the afternoon, we just restructure our hours to allow it. I’m not much of a morning person, so the occasional sleep in does me wonders, working late into the night doesn’t bother me!
In our spare time
Patty is the mother of a 10 month old girl, Harper. It’s no surprise that Harper had an unhealthy obsession with laptop computers from around 4 months of age. It’s quite amazing what Patty is able to achieve as first time mother and consultant. She somehow manages to deliver an exceptional quality of work, whilst also juggling her family and social life. My wedding is coming up in November, after just shy of a decade with my partner. So, at the moment I am excitedly planning our big day. I also love fishing and spending time with my parents in Forster (AKA my paradise). Patty and I are both partial to the occasional vino, so we would love to catch up over a glass with anyone interested in marketing, media and events for their organisation!
