For those of you that don't know, I have recently returned from the New Beginnings Fair in Sydney (Feb 27th & 28th, www.newbeginningsfair.com.au) – an event for small business, startups and solopreneurs. One Small Step was handpicked to be one of the vendors and I continue to be struck by the energy and passion of the whole event – the vendors, the speakers, the guests – and by how incredibly fortunate I was to be there.
Anika – one of the co-founders of the New Beginnings Fair - contacted me late last year, having found me on Instagram. It really was like a bolt out of the blue, as One Small Step was only a few months old at that point, and initially the idea of flying 3,294km across the country for a trade fair seemed a little crazy. However, while I am definitely a fan of structure and planning, I am also a big fan of trusting your intuition, and something just felt right about it from the word go. When I founded One Small Step, one of my priorities was to market the business in a different way - to ensure I connected with my target market and they really understood the value of what I could offer. The desire I have to provide the market with something unique and ultimately, really useful for small business owners is shared by Anika & Marcos – their vision was to create a trade show unlike anything currently out there for small business and particularly young entrepreneurs. Shared values in business are really important to me, so we (my very encouraging and supportive husband & I!) made the decision to put me on the plane. And boy, I am so glad I did.
As I walked into the space (Pier 2/3 in Walsh Bay – an incredibly beautiful and rustic space, right on the water in Sydney) I had a very strong feeling of synchronicity – that I was exactly where I was meant to be at that point in time. That feeling was only heightened once the trade fair kicked off – the guests came streaming in, full of passion and excitement which was incredibly contagious. The authenticity and warmth in the room was so inspiring. One of my favourite things about being in small business – and in my job specifically - is getting out there and meeting other small business owners. Learning about their stories and businesses really excites me – and let me tell you, there was no shortage of incredibly original business ideas in the room.
I was also lucky enough to be picked to present a workshop on business planning on the first day which I will admit, I was a little anxious about! I have done plenty of presentations and workshops in my ‘previous life’ in the corporate world, but in between having my little girl and starting my first small business, it had been a little while since I was 'centre stage'! And I am pleased to report, the workshop went really well. I was (and still am!) genuinely so excited to be given an opportunity to help other small business owners – help them understand and believe that they can achieve their business goals by showing them a clear path forward.
So what comes next for One Small Step? I’m taking a leaf out of my own book and am brainstorming and planning as we speak. I am really looking forward to meeting many more wonderful small business owners over the next 12 months, and make sure you stay tuned via our mailing list for announcements on more workshops and events coming your way soon.
Huge thanks to Anika and Marcos for inviting me to be a part of their vision – no doubt there are many more exciting things ahead for that very talented pair. Thanks also to Decorative Events in Sydney for pulling together such a beautiful stand for me, my gorgeous graphic design maven Tash from Acqua Design Studio for all of my branded collateral, to Amanda at HatTrick PR in Perth for being such a clever wordsmith and making me sound awesome, and to my beautiful friend Georgia from Mrs Black & Co for being my florist/stylist extraordinaire (find all their details below). I’m one lucky gal!
