Can you share the story of why you started your business?
CCS is a consultancy based law firm which provides practical and cost effective legal advice without all the silly legal jargon and the overpriced legal bills. It is just me here at CCS and I work mostly from home which keeps my overheads low and which also results in a much more friendly and informal environment where I can really get to know my clients better.
I started CCS about 6 months ago, after spending many years working as both a private practice lawyer and an in-house lawyer. In my last role, I was the General Counsel and General Manager of Risk, Insurance, Commercial and Procurement for a multinational marine construction company where I was in charge of contracts and projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I loved the job and I loved the big deals but the travel and the hours were crazy and with 2 young kids I really felt like I was missing out on spending that precious time with them. In the end, I decided to take a huge leap and I started my own at home law firm instead.
Luckily, I was able to pick up a solid base of loyal clients really quickly by way of various companies that I have worked with in the past which has been great. However, since starting CCS I have noticed that there is a real need for straight forward legal advice in the small business area where many new businesses just really want someone to just give them practical advice about various legal issues that might come up. Legal advice does not have to be expensive or complicated. Instead, legal advice should be cost effective and it should always cater to the needs of each client no matter who they are or what type of business they have

What’s your favourite part of your job?
Getting to know different people and different businesses. I especially love to hear about peoples’ individual passions and how they have come about getting to where they are at. Every story is different!
What’s your #1 tip for those just launching their business?
When I am helping someone start a new business, no matter what their business is, I always ask everyone the same question “What is the worst that can happen?” For example, what if your partner decides to leave the business next year or you cannot agree on a major issue? What if you suffer ongoing cash flow issues? What if you promise a client something and you can’t deliver on that promise? What if an employee or a competitor steals your ideas?
I do realise that this is a bit of a glass half empty attitude but it doesn’t have to be completely empty and I even once had a client brain storm this question with their business partner over a few glasses of wine and a lovely lunch. But no matter how or where you ask yourself that question, it is really important that you do ask that question as best you can before launching your business so that you can plan in advance for these types of things just in case.
