Whilst I haven't personally met tonight's Spotlight Series business owner, I have been following Mackayla's business for a while. Let's face it, there are now a huge amount of businesses out there offering social media services and it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. Social Stylings is a business that I feel has stood out from the start - part of it is of course the on-brand aesthetic that is so evident in her Instagram feed. But I love Mackayla's vibe - vibrant, sophisticated, yet to the point and authentic. Her business is going from strength to strength and I have no doubt you'll be seeing a lot more of her in future. Can you share the story of why you started your business?
When the idea came to me for my business, Social Stylings, I had been working in the fashion industry for quite some time and was visiting local fashion boutiques on a weekly basis.
One aspect of my job was sourcing fashion boutiques to stock our labels. After visiting plenty of them I realised that a lot of the beautiful boutiques I visited didn’t have a social media presence that matched. Their Facebook and Instagram accounts were neglected, and weren’t doing them any favours in getting new customers into their stores.
After doing some research I noticed there was barely any advice for fashion businesses in marketing online, and there were no Social Media Agencies that specifically assisted fashion businesses. I knew I had to do something, and that’s why I started Social Stylings.

I love seeing my client’s excited reactions when they see their followers and likes climbing… and when it leads to a sale, that makes me jump for joy!
What’s your #1 tip for those just launching their business?
You need to make sure you’re passionate about what you’re going to do. It needs to be something that lights you up inside that you wouldn’t give up for anything. That is what will you get you through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Social Media Manager
If you are a small business owner with Social Media accounts, chances are that the thought to hire a Social Media Manager has crossed your mind. Social Media Marketing can be a time-consuming and confusing marketing practice, but it can also be one of the most cost-effective ways to promote your business and increase sales. However, there are a few questions that you need to ask yourself BEFORE hiring a Social Media Manager, so that you don’t end up wasting hundreds of dollars that you could be putting back into your business or in your own pocket.
Ready to find out what those questions are?
1. Do you have a spare hour?
If you have a spare hour, 7 days a week, that you could commit to putting towards your Social Media Marketing time? It could be that hour where you are sitting on the couch staring aimlessly at the TV screen. It could be that hour when you’ve just woken up but don’t really feel like jumping out of bed just yet.
If you have an hour a day, and some great images of your product or service, you have enough time to do your own Social Media Marketing.
2. Are you a control freak?
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a hard time delegating tasks to someone else, for the fear that they just won’t get it done the way you want them to. For me, this inner control freak comes out when I ask my partner to fill the dishwasher…. oh the horror!
If you want to save yourself some extra stress from worrying about what someone else is going to do with your Social Media, consider hiring yourself first.
3. Do you want to be the first contact for your customers?
When you hire a Social Media Manager, they are going to be the person responding to comments and direct messages on your behalf. Would you prefer your customers to know that they are talking directly with you, or one of your staff members, instead of a person they’ve never met before from an agency that is managing your accounts?
If you want to be the first point of contact at all times, and want to keep the sense of familiarity alive with your current and potential customers, it may be wise to learn to effectively manage your own Social Media.
4. What would you do if someone bought followers or likes?
One issue that is very real in the Social Media Marketing industry is the faking of followers, likes, and even comments. Although Social Stylings has a firm no-fake policy, I have spoken with plenty of business owners in my workshops that have been stung in the past by agencies and independent contractors who buy (or gain using free apps) fake likes and followers for their customers. Those fake followers and likes usually come from spammy accounts that will never ever buy from you. If you want to build credibility and increase sales using Social Media, this is something you need to avoid at all costs.
To alleviate the worry, you may need to manage your own Social Media.
5. Could you spare a day to learn what you need to know?
The truth about marketing with Social Media is that once you understand how it works, it really isn’t that difficult.
My partner plays basketball quite heavily, and when we first met I had absolutely no idea what was going on when I went to his games. I always thought that basketball was just too fast and too complicated for me to learn, so I just never watched it or joined in at school when we had to play for PE.
However, after a few times of watching my partner play I began to notice patterns and quickly picked up a few rules of the game. I now know if I just sat myself down to learn the exact rules and how to play, I could give it a go myself!
This is the main reason why I decided to teach Social Media Marketing workshops to small business owners. I really do believe that all you need to do is commit to learning this new skill, and you will be able to quickly and easily achieve your desired marketing results all on your own.
