Something that is becoming more and more prevalent in my role as a business coach is helping my clients put the tools and strategies in place to have a better work/life balance, whilst still encouraging growth. Burnout is something I see a lot, particularly as so many of my clients are mothers, as well as business owners. Stress is a bit factor in our modern lives and something we need to be proactive about if we want to avoid ongoing health issues as a result. I am really excited to be shining the light on Sherri’s business in tonight’s feature and I encourage you all to have someone in your life like Sherri, that can help you stay in balance in our very busy lives.
Can you share the story of why you started your business?
Naturopathic medicine has always been a passion of mine. I have always lived by the natural principle that ‘food is medicine’, and I instilled this into life whilst I was raising my family. I decided to formalise my education at a mature age with a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) at Endeavour College of Natural Health.
During my study, I worked alongside some of Perth’s leading Naturopaths assisting in their dispensaries and it was during this time that I realised I really wanted to start my own business. It was nerve-wracking for me! I’m a mother of three children who had run two businesses whilst living on a farm in the Eastern Wheatbelt, but had never had any formal business training.
It’s been a challenge every step of the way, encouraging me to grow, develop my skills and to lean on the amazing people around me. During the process of deciding to build my business, I came across a fellow Endeavour College graduate who was selling her established business to follow her heart to Europe. I bought Alimenta Health from her, and began my journey into the deep end of business ownership!
Faced with overwhelm around social media, marketing, cash flow (and the rest!), I went back to basics and delved into the business unit I had studied at college. Slowly but surely, I started to find my feet (with a lot of help along the way) and turned the passion I have for naturopathy into a thriving business in Subiaco.
Tell us more about the services you offer.
As a Naturopathic Practitioner, I specialise in helping people restore an optimal level of wellbeing into their lives, particularly focusing on hormone and thyroid conditions, adrenal fatigue, dealing with stress.
Adrenal fatigue is probably my biggest area of focus at the moment, as I see so many patients coming to me with symptoms associated with the condition. They often feel overwhelmed, are easily tired, experience dizziness, poor sleep patterns, low sex drive, being forgetful, feeling/looking puffy and stiff, have frequent headaches… the list goes on!
It’s something that you absolutely cannot mess around with! As business owners, we are particularly susceptible to the condition due to ongoing levels of stress wearing us down, and if you don’t do something about it, you could be putting yourself at risk for future illnesses. Other symptoms include things that we might joke around with – relying on coffee to wake you up, puffiness under the eyes, stiff/achy bones, painful menstrual cycles – but adrenal fatigue is a serious issue!
Conventional medical tests at your GP simply can’t diagnose adrenal fatigue, so if you’re experiencing any or all of these symptoms – get to your Naturopath for a test! We’ll check your thyroid function and cortisol levels (the stress hormone – elevated levels often contribute to weight gain, yuk!), and help you get your body back into optimal wellness.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Where to start? I have lots of favourite aspects of my profession, but one of the most enjoyable is to see people actually get well and vibrate again. Being alongside them in their own journey to feeling like their best self is incredibly rewarding, and something that I am proud to be a part of. Each and every patient is very special to me. As Naturopaths, we go above and beyond to assist in this path to wellbeing, and I love being able to become a part of someone’s path to wellness.
Working with business owners is a particular passion of mine, as I see so many people suffering from adrenal fatigue – a common by-product of ongoing stress. A lot of my patients come in suffering from insomnia, use coffee and sugar as pick me ups and have that mid-afternoon slump we all know too well. All of these symptoms of adrenal fatigue. With a few diet and lifestyle changes (along with herbs and supplements in some cases), their daily wellness can dramatically change.
What’s your #1 tip for those just launching their business?
It’s so important to have a great team behind before you launch into your business. From your bank manager to your marketing guru, building a team of experts you trust around you is invaluable.
I’m also a big believer in the value of a mentor or coach – someone who you can bounce ideas off, inspire you to achieve your version of success and keep you accountable. I was very lucky to have some amazing lecturers during my study at Endeavour College, some of who have mentored me throughout my years. I still contact them to discuss cases and new business ideas, and it’s amazing how having different viewpoints can bring about new opportunities!
Also, investing in yourself is a huge part of successful business ownership. I didn’t have any formal qualifications in business – I just wanted to learn about the healing powers of herbs and food! Thankfully, my degree included a business unit which at the time I found extremely challenging, but now I can see how this brought a tremendous amount of value to my business. It was well worth my time as I learnt so many fundamental principles that help me every day.
Anything exciting in store you’d like to share?
2017 is proving to be a very exciting time so far! I’m in my clinic in Subiaco regularly seeing patients, which I love. I’m also planning to return to Endeavour College to support the new wave of students, and I’m really excited to be a part of their journey! Stay tuned for some more exciting announcements coming soon!
