Tonight I am delighted to be shining the spotlight on Ale Wiecek from Sqr One, a digital marketing and customer experience studio based in Brisbane. Reading through Ale’s story, I was really struck by some of the similarities in our journey, and by the similarities she shares with many of my clients and peers. The thing I love about Ale’s story is that she really wanted to create a business with soul and purpose, and through that has a compelling point of difference that is so apparent. Not to mention the fact that 25% of Sqr One’s profits go to not-for-profit organisations - super cool if you ask me. Read more about Ale’s journey below x
Can you share the story of why you started your business?
I started my business because I wanted a better work life balance. I used to work 50-60 hour week days as a Senior Digital Marketing Manager, and as a mum that was really not providing the happiness that I needed in life.
In May 2015, I moved from Sydney to Townsville and then to Brisbane after the birth of my second child. The fact that I was new to being a mum of two, and I had very limited conviction that I would find a job that would tick all the boxes, I decided to push beyond my fear of not having a six-figure income, at a prestigious and respected company, and try totally something completely new and out of my comfort zone: a new venture in a new city and with a new child.
My business idea wasn’t ground-breaking at first. I wanted to use my marketing skills in digital marketing while doing something meaningful. But the problem was that I didn’t feel like that idea was really hitting my purpose. Then something slightly upsetting yet life-changing happened. I put my laptop on the roof of my car and drove off. There I had saved my digital marketing consultancy business and marketing plans. I never saved anything on the cloud. Horrible them and funny now, this somehow made me question my original ideas and so Sqr One was born.
A Customer experience and Digital Marketing studio whose mission is to eradicate bad customer experience with humanity in mind. We transform small and medium size businesses into customer-centric loving entities, for them to have the profits they need obtained in a meaningful and connected way.
Sqr one is a movement, not a business. We donate 25% of our profits to NGOs that are making a change in the world.
Tell us more about the services you offer.
We mainly focus on the discovery phase of a business. The real foundational work a business has (or should) to complete in order to understand their purpose, their market, their customers and themselves.
One of our signature services is Customer Journey Mapping, Persona development and research. We love using our brains, data and reality to truly put ourselves in someone else’s shoes – in this case a business’ customer so they can truly deliver an experience across every area of their marketing. We help them create that by being proactive, and knowing our customer’s feelings and pain points, and not out of reactiveness and lack of empathy.
We offer one on one consulting, training and soon online courses for small business who don’t have access to the customer experience knowledge utilised by the large corporates.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
That every day I feel scared and want to chicken out, yet I manage to take small steps towards the movement and change I want to create in the world.
What’s your #1 tip for those just launching their business?
I feel like I wasted so much time and money into shiny online courses and coaches and things that now I know I didn’t need but then, I felt that if I didn’t invest in them, I wouldn’t have a clue about what I was doing.
I would say pick one you think you need and follow through, implement and action before you jump into the next shiny thing you think you need.
