So chances are if you're an entrepreneur (or an aspiring one), you would have heard about finding your 'why'. Your 'why' is basically the reason you're in business; that is, what drives you. What gets you out of bed in the morning, what excites you, what difference you are trying to make in the world. It sounds like a pretty simple thing to identify, right? Not always. In tonight's blog post, I want to dig a little deeper - and give you five reasons you need to get real with your why.
1. It's the basis of your business strategy.
Your 'why', which should inform your business vision, mission and values, is like the foundation on which your business is built. And therefore, the foundation of any great business strategy starts here. And if you're familiar with me at all, you'll know how much I LOVE a good strategy (read more about why here). It is often a very hard thing to articulate, but it is worth the time investment, I can guarantee! Businesses that have a compelling story behind them are successful for a reason - your customers can resonate with your quest, and want to jump on board.
2. It enables you to really speak to your tribe.
If a client comes to me asking for advice on how to create more powerful, targeted sales & marketing messages, the first thing I will ask them is - what's your 'why'? What is at the heart of your brand, what difference are you trying to make to your customers? Once you have identified your why, it is SO much easier to create sales & marketing messages that really speak to your target market. Great brands - and therefore great sales & marketing messages - stand out from the rest. And as I've mentioned above, you need to have a compelling story to do that. Incorporating the beating heart of why you are in business is one of the best ways to build an engaged customer base that continue to buy from you AND refer their friends and family. #winning.
3. It should stop you from making excuses.
So one of my key drivers is getting small business owners to take responsibility for their success. I am a firm believer that we can all achieve what we want to in life, and in business - but your mindset has to be right first. And let's face it, we all know that this hustling life can be tiring, confronting, overwhelming, and even a little bit lonely. So you've got to have a 'why' that really gets you out of bed in the morning, that makes you prepared to tackle obstacles head on, and go out there and create your own opportunities. An abundance or growth mindset is all about being open to receiving what the universe has to offer - so don't be afraid to price yourself what you're worth either!
4. It's the starting point in mapping out your direction.
One of the things I hear most often from clients or other small business owners is that they are lacking clarity and direction. And I love that I can help them achieve that! One of the first things I will ask - again - is what is your why? And secondly, what are your goals? Where are you trying to get to? To create an a$$-kicking action plan you need to have a set of business objectives that are aspirational yet achievable - and your overall vision for your business or brand needs to be aligned with that, otherwise it ain't going to make sense to you, or your customers! If you get it right from the outset, your brand presence will be stronger, more competitive and more meaningful, because your direction made sense from the word go.
5. When the going gets tough...
So like I mentioned above, the life of an entrepreneur ain't always that glamorous (as much as social media can make it look that way). Sometimes the only thing keeping you going is the fire in your belly! But let's face it, vulnerability can be one of the most compelling things in the world - Brene Brown's TED talk 'The Power of Vulnerability' is one of the top ten most viewed TED talks in the world for a reason. Tap into your own personal 'why' and open that up to your customers, if it feels right. Share your struggles with your peers. Don't be afraid of appearing less than perfect - these days customers are looking for brands that are authentic, different, and human. Embrace the journey and hold that dream close!
